When And Why To Change The Spark Plugs Of The Car?

Function Of The Spark Plugs:

  • The spark plug is an essential part in the ignition system of a combustion engine. It is installed inside each cylinder and produces the spark that triggers the combustion of the air-fuel mixture .
  • It consists of an upper part that is connected to the coil using a high voltage cable.
  • The other part, the so-called body or neck , is screwed to the cylinder head and contains the electrode that produces the spark.
  • The quality of the spark produced by the spark plug determines the combustion force and therefore the power and smoothness of the engine.

Why Replace The Spark Plugs?

A defective spark plug causes the following symptoms:

  • Lack of power in the engine
  • Excessive fuel consumption
  • Pollution engine; Important to check the status of the catalyst

When To Replace Spark Plugs?

  • Spark plugs are replaced from time to time with an interval of between 30,000 km and 60,000 km according to the manufacturer’s recommendations (see vehicle maintenance chart).
  • It is important to replace all spark plugs, even if only one of them is defective, so that there is no imbalance in ignition
  • On certain models there are two spark plugs per cylinder that are replaced as a pair. They are identical or different depending on the engine.

How To Change The Spark Plugs?

  • Disassembly of the spark plugs.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery, following the instructions in Safety instructions .
  • It is imperative to let the car cool down before dismantling a spark plug.
  • Clear access to the spark plugs as appropriate: protection, intake manifold, air filter housing, etc.

There Are Several Possibilities:

With Cable: Never pull the wires of the spark plugs.
I. Grasp the spark plugs by the rubber cap with your fingers or with a long beak clip.

II. Take note or make a mark on the ignition wire to know which cylinder was connected and so do not mistake when mounting the new spark plug.

Without Cable With Ramp Type Coil: Disconnect the coil connector to access the spark plugs

Without A Cable With A Spark Plug Coil (Pencil): Disconnect the bobbin connectors one by one and then remove the coil to access the spark plugs.

  • Loosen the spark plug by keeping the spark plug wrench aligned with the spark plug.
  • Continue and finish with the extension of the spark plug wrench, but manually. No resistance should occur.
  • Assembly of the spark plugs.
  • Before installing new spark plugs, make sure that the new spark plug is identical to the one that has been removed.
  • Check the fitting of the connecting nut or remove it according to the type of connection.
  • Check the opening of the electrode and that the porcelain part does not present cracks or cracks. The opening of the same spark plug varies according to the engine of the car (see vehicle data sheet or spark plug box).
  • By default, the spark plugs are adjusted to a maximum opening and, therefore, a regulation is sometimes necessary.
  • Pre-clean the spark plug inlet using a bellows.

Use the spark plug wrench extension to manually install the new spark plug into your space, being careful to position it correctly. An incorrectly installed spark plug may cause damage to the cylinder head thread. Finish tightening sparingly using the spark plug wrench. Reinstall the coil or the ignition cable directly to the corresponding cylinder. Click here to know more about the spark plugs at techrogers.com
